The Life and Loves of a Victorian Clerk The Diary of Nathaniel Bryceson, 1846

Step back in time to Victorian Pimlico
Victorian man and woman in Regents Park, winter
From 1 January 2010, read of the experiences and innermost thoughts of a remarkable Victorian diarist on the Westminster Archives website.
The diary of Nathaniel Bryceson, a young wharf clerk in Pimlico, is a rare insight into the lives and loves of a 19 year-old in the early Victorian era. A colourful character, Bryceson takes us through the year 1846, with details of his working life and of his relationship with Ann Fox, his mistress and closest companion.
Bryceson’s diary breathes life into an era that is too often portrayed as socially regimented. From financial affairs to affairs of the heart, the diary is a truly personal take on the life of a young Victorian in 1846.
Having existed only in manuscript up until now, the diary will be serialised on-line throughout 2010 by City of Westminster Archives.

    La Machine

    New to Steampunk
Hello! My name is Casie, I'm 20 and a photographer. I've been a lolita for a while now and admired steampunk in and out of the lolita world. I've finally gotten the courage together, and the reasoning, to put together my own steampunk lolita outfit. Now getting a steampunk outfit started is hard, doing it in lolita, is near impossible. o.O

I'd just like to share with you what I've gotten so far, any pointers or ideas would be great.

I have super short blond hair, but I'm trying to grow it out now. It's gonna take a while though. -_-

In the picture... I have a tea dyed blouse, underbust vest, snake skin belt, tea dyed striped overskirt (It has pockets! o.O), polka dot underskirt, and brown engineer boots. I also have a cute sheriff's badge. I also have more lolita esque shoes and over the knee socks, but they arent shown.

Now what I want to get for the outfit is a leather gun holster and a ray gun, some kind of hat or facinator, spurs, and jewlrey. I'm kind of going for a western themed steampunk.

    The Year of the Villain
Ladies, gentlemen, zombies, airship pirates, and suchlike beings...

We are not amused. For years now, steampunk has been ridden with your ilk- the would be heroes, noble pirates, plucky engineers, golden-hearted pros-

You get the idea. This situation has become downright intolerable- there's now so many of you lot, that any would-be problem has now been swamped by hordes of overeager heroes. It's time for a change. While I certainly cannot speak for any part of the community, much less steampunkery at large, I hereby declare 2010 to be the Year of The Villain. It's time for us to don our black coats and hats, wax our mustaches, prime the dynamite, and throw the switches. It's time to remind the heroes just why they needed to exist in the first place.

Heya! I've been watching this community for a long time and only rescently joined. My name's Steph. I'm a pretty novice sewer(?) and have been interested in steampunk style for a while now.
I've come here asking for some advice. I plan on making a leather mask/cowl thingie for a costume. I'm making it out of fake leather, but I want the leather to look aged and dirty even. I want to darken some areas and lighten other.

Here's a picture of the leather:

(I know this isn't very well consructed, I've learned alot since this project) The brown leather is what I plan on using. I imagine it being easier if it were real leather, but that's not the case. I was thinking that maybe I could use shoe polish to darken up the seams and crease and whatever else, or would that rub off everywhere?
I don't know, I've never done anything like this before, I need sujestions!

    storytelling
    'ello.
I'm not sure how to start on this topic, so I'll just get into it. A lot of steampunkers out there are into the crafting of jewelry, clothing or something else, and I have to be honest and tell you that I don't see my particular talent in those areas but I do know what I can do, and that's tell stories. The problem is, I don't see how that helps my finances except in terms of larger novels(which I'm working on, but that's not the point.)

I'd like to get into live storytelling to help my -ehem- public relations, but I don't know if it's such a good idea, or even how to pursue it, and if it would actually work out for any period of time.
    Your thoughts?

    Gatehouse Gazette #10

A Happy New Year to all our readers! With 2009 behind us—a year that saw the steampunk community continue to grow and interest in the genre extend to mainstream media—we predict that 2010 will be a dieselpunk year.

We see mid-century influences in modern-day fashion and film and a revival of interest in times past in general, especially in the interwar era as a result of the economic hardships suffered then and today. At several websites and blogs dedicated to dieselpunk, enthusiasts are hard at work building the genre into a movement with its own style and philosophy. The Gatehouse Gazette is no exception in this process. As steampunk is steadily entering the mainstream, we are free to devote all the more energy to promoting dieselpunk. We have begun exploring its potential from the very first issue of this publication onward and will continue to do so by offering a platform for opinion and analysis. Dieselpunk is truly taking off—and therefore this Gatehouse Gazette is “taking to the skies!”

Tying in our aviation theme with the emergence of a dieselpunk mentality, we offer biographies of two heroes: Howard Hughes and Amelia Earhart, written by James Roberts and J. Parkin respectively. Both were pioneers and perhaps a tad eccentric. Both were innovators and adventurers. And both continue to inspire us are we reminiscence about their accomplishments and the seemingly more heroic epoch that was their time.
While Earhart was the first aviatrix to crisscross across North America and later, the world, a league of equally daring men attempted to conquer the Arctic by air. Marcus Rauchfuß tells the story of the early twentieth century polar expeditions by airship, balloon and zeppelin. Later on in this issue you will find him interviewing Ms Kaleena Kiff; producer and director of the web series Riese: a steampunkesque adventure that incorporates Norse mythology and dystopian elements seemingly inspired by Piecraftian dieselpunk.

In our literary section is an exclusive preview of Lavie Tidhar’s upcoming steampunk novel The Bookman which should hit the shelves around the time this issue is released. Hilde Heyvaert reviews Philip Reeve’s Larklight trilogy and dedicates her Steampunk Wardrobe column to the aviator look while also reminding us of one of Disney’s most underrated adventures: the movie Treasure Planet. Lastly, Trubetskoy writes an extensive comparative review of The Angel of the Revolution by George Griffith and H.G. Wells’ The War in the Air—another chapter in the history of alternate history fiction that no serious steampunk can afford to skip!

    brown doll skirt
This brown doll skirt is perfect for steampunk outfits and costumes, or for daily wear if you just like the colour brown :)
It's cheerfully short, but not too short (it will be longer on a Pullip or Blythe doll I imagine).
The fabric has stitched line details, which makes it extra special :)
It's for direct sale via my website :)
